Makeshapes is for building on-demand group learning experiences: a group learns together, guided by the experience itself, without needing an expert or a trained facilitator in the room. Designing one well is a craft. It takes a facilitator’s understanding of how a group learns and a content creator’s skill at building digital material, and most authors have more of one than the other. We use AI to bring the way our own learning designers work to every author, so they can build high-quality experiences more efficiently and effectively.
We add AI where it saves the person building an experience real time, and we build it so everything it produces can be reviewed, edited and adjusted before it reaches learners. We will always tell you where AI is present in Makeshapes. We expect to change these practices as we learn, and we welcome feedback from users and experts on how we do this.
Our commitments
As AI becomes part of how people build learning, this is what we hold ourselves to.
We commit to working with our customers
We build these tools with the people who use them, so they are practical, effective and fit how organisations actually learn. Your judgment comes first; AI is there to help.
We commit to supporting quality practice
We are excited by anything that saves time and removes drudgery from the learning process, and we use AI thoughtfully, in support of good learning design. Anything AI produces can be reviewed, edited and adjusted before it is used.
We commit to openness and honesty
We will always let you know when AI is present in Makeshapes and how it can be used. We know AI has limits, and we will keep changing how we use it as we learn. We actively seek feedback from users, experts and the wider community to shape these practices.
We commit to protecting your privacy, security and data
We take the privacy and security of your data seriously and comply with the privacy laws that apply, on top of the standards in our Privacy Notice. Your content is never used to train AI models. The detail is in the FAQs below, and the binding terms are in our Terms of Service and Data Processing Agreement.
FAQs
Is it on by default?
No. AI features are off until your organisation asks for them, and they are switched on per organisation, feature by feature, by your account manager. If you can see a feature, your organisation has it. We will switch them off again whenever you ask.
Is our content used to train AI models?
No. Your content is used to generate your result and for nothing else. Makeshapes does not use customer content to train, fine-tune or improve any AI model, and the providers we use are bound to the same rule by contract with us.
Who owns what the AI makes?
You do. Anything the AI features generate is your content. It is machine-generated, so it can be wrong or incomplete, and it needs a person’s review before it is relied on or published. The AI drafts; you decide. Nothing is published on your behalf.
Where does our content go when we use an AI feature?
Only the content needed for that one request is sent to the provider behind the feature, and only when your organisation uses it. The providers are listed as sub-processors in Annex 3 of our DPA, alongside the ones that run the platform. Today they are:
- Amazon Web Services (Australia and United States)
- ElevenLabs (United States)
- Mux (United States)
None of them keeps your content to build models or profiles. To hear about any change to this list, use Subscribe to updates on the DPA page.
What do we ask of you?
Where your privacy laws need consent for AI processing of your users’ audio, video or other personal information, that consent is yours to get. Please do not put sensitive or special-category personal data into the platform.
Is there a limit on how much AI we can use?
AI use is part of your plan, and it is sized so that normal use is not something you have to think about. Behind the scenes there is an allowance for your organisation; if it is ever reached, only the AI features pause until it refreshes or is topped up. Nothing you have already made is affected. Your account manager can tell you where you are and add more.
